Dressage

Dressage is the basis for Karen’s training program. The elemental principles of Dressage strengthen the connection between horse and rider, allowing them to move forward as one. The initial focus is developing rhythm and balance. The rider must learn to recognize and ultimately feel the rhythm that their horse is most relaxed and comfortable with. From there our goal is to improve balance by teaching the rider to engage the horse from its hind end, thus lightening the front. Throughout this process, the horse begins to improve structurally, developing a stronger topline and more prominent hind end. The rider has strengthened their seat and learned to use their aids effectively.

Now they are ready to move more forward, developing elasticity within each gait and refining overall balance. Exercises to supple and strengthen the horse laterally are incorporated into every lesson and training session. As horse and rider progress, they learn to master new movements and are able to reach new levels of throughness and collection. Long-lines are often employed to achieve greater suspension and self-carriage without resistance. With emphasis on relaxation, my goal is to create a stronger, more confident partnership.

Some of Karen’s accolades in Dressage include earning her USDF Bronze Medal in 2005, Suncoast Dressage Year-End Champion and Hi Score at Third Level in 2006 and subsequently at Fourth Level in 2007, and numerous Year-End Championships at multiple Levels and Gold Medal Awards for the Gold Coast Dressage Association.
